8 Weeks Before Moving House: A Week-by-Week Timeline for Sydney Families

Moving house is consistently rated one of life’s most stressful events — but most of that stress is avoidable.
The problem isn’t the move itself. It’s starting too late.
Families across Liverpool, Moorebank, Casula and Warwick Farm often underestimate how quickly the weeks disappear once you’ve signed a lease or exchanged contracts. School enrolments, utility connections, address changes, packing — it all stacks up fast.
This guide gives you a realistic, week-by-week plan that takes the guesswork out of moving house in Sydney.”We left it too late, and it was absolute chaos. The removalist we wanted was fully booked, the kids’ school hadn’t received their records, and I was packing until 2 am. Start early — seriously.”
— Parent, r/sydney”Started planning 8 weeks out, and it made such a difference. Moving day was actually calm. The kids had time to adjust, and we weren’t rushing anything.”

— u/WesternSydneyMum, r/AusParentingThis is the most important week. The decisions you make now will determine how smooth everything else goes.
Book your removalist. Liverpool and Western Sydney are busy corridors — quality removalist Liverpool fill their calendars 4–6 weeks out, especially around school holidays, end of month, and the December–January period. Book early to secure your preferred date. Get your paperwork in order. If you’re buying, confirm your settlement date with your solicitor. If you’re renting, check your lease notice period carefully. Start decluttering. Go room by room. Be honest about what you use, what you love, and what’s been sitting in a cupboard untouched. Every box you don’t pack is one less box to move. Checklist for Week 8:
- Book removalist (confirm date, get written quote)
- Confirm settlement or lease end date
- Notify landlord in writing if renting
- Start decluttering — donate, sell or recycle unwanted items
- Arrange building and contents insurance for the new home
Who to notify: If you have school-age children, start researching school enrolments now. Public schools in NSW have defined catchment zones — your new address determines which school your child is entitled to attend. Use the NSW School Finder to check catchment zones for your new suburb.”I didn’t realise how many places needed my new address. Banks, insurance, the council, the ATO… it took weeks to get through everything. Wish I’d started earlier.”
— Facebook comment, Sydney Moving Parents group
- Begin address change notifications (ATO, Medicare, Centrelink)
- Research school catchment zones for the new suburb
- Notify employer of new address
- Update bank, super fund, health insurance
- Off-season clothing and shoes
- Books, DVDs, board games
- Spare linen and towels
- Garage and shed items
- Decorative items and artwork
- Source packing boxes and materials
- Begin packing non-essentials (books, off-season clothes, garage)
- Label boxes by room and contents
- Set up a dedicated staging area (spare room or garage corner)
- Electricity and gas — contact your provider to disconnect at your current address and reconnect at your new address on moving day
- Internet/NBN — allow 2–3 weeks minimum for a new connection; business-grade NBN can take longer
- Sydney Water — update your account address
- Australia Post mail redirection — set this up now at auspost.com.au (covers anything you miss)
- Contact electricity/gas provider (disconnect + reconnect dates)
- Book NBN/internet connection at new address
- Set up Australia Post mail redirection
- Update Sydney Water account
- Notify subscriptions and streaming services of new address
If you have kids: Let each child pack their own “special box” — their favourite toys, books, and comfort items. They carry it themselves on moving day. It gives them a sense of control and reduces anxiety about the move.

If you have pets: Update your pet’s microchip address now. Arrange vet records transfer if you’re moving suburbs. Plan where your cat or dog will be on moving day — the safest option is with a friend or family member.
- Pack kitchen (leave out only 4-week essentials)
- Kids’ special boxes packed and labelled
- Update pet microchip address
- Transfer vet records if changing vets
- Arrange pet care for moving day
If you’re relocating within the south-west, booking your removalist Campbelltown at least 3–4 weeks out ensures you secure your preferred date, especially during peak periods like end-of-month and school holidays
Pack the remaining rooms — bedrooms, bathrooms, and living areas. Leave out only what you need for the final week.
- Removalist booking (date, time, address, truck size)
- Utility disconnection and reconnection dates
- School enrolment paperwork submitted
- Pack remaining rooms
- Confirm removalist booking in writing
- Defrost fridge (24 hours before move)
- Empty fuel from outdoor equipment
- Collect any dry cleaning or library books
- Phone chargers and power banks
- Kids’ pyjamas and comfort items
- Toilet paper (always forgotten)
- Towels and toiletries
- Coffee, tea, kettle
- Snacks and easy food for the first night
- Important documents (passports, settlement papers, lease)
- Medications
- Pack first night bag (travels in car, not truck)
- Return borrowed items to neighbours/friends
- Cancel local memberships and deliveries
- Do a final walkthrough of every room and storage area
- Photograph every room before leaving (especially if renting)
- Find your nearest GP and register before you need one
- Walk the kids to their new school before the first day — familiarity reduces first-day anxiety
- Explore the local area together: Casula Mall, Liverpool CBD, Moorebank Sports Club, and local parks
— r/sydney moving threadKeep routines as consistent as possible. Even if the house isn’t fully unpacked, keeping mealtimes and bedtimes the same gives kids (and adults) a sense of stability.

Saif is the one you'll usually meet on the driveway. More than 7,000 Sydney moves later he still runs the daily schedule, briefs each crew before they leave the depot, and jumps on the jobs with tight access, heavy pianos or a same-day deadline.
He built the way we wrap and load: blankets on every timber edge, mattress covers as standard, straps against the wall of the truck rather than through your furniture. If a job runs into a stairwell nobody measured or a lift the building forgot to book, Saif is the phone call that sorts it out while the crew keeps working.
